2021 was the first year that I wrote down and properly tried to stick to achieving personal objectives. I learned a bit along the way:
- I could do with decreasing the time it takes for me to make a decision. Where it’s not something that is a main part of life. (I.e it takes me too long to decide on bits for the kitchen renovation). I need to start out-sourcing these choices, or coming to a resolution faster.
- Setting myself longer term goals, such as weekly targets, then each day checking in on these, helps me keep on track.
I’ve decided to set yearly goals for myself again in 2022. It would be nice to just vibe through life. But I feel better about myself when I achieve something that I planned.
Objective 1: Become better at communicating what I do + have fun with it.
Write
- [x] Continue with week notes... weekly obviously, also turn these into tweets on the regular. Do this in my own way, bring some creativity into it.
Tell people
- [ ] Create sharable documentation of links that I find super useful + interesting.
- [ ] Split it up in a way that works + write 6 posts this year that each cover a specific area of product management. With examples of how I've applied that theory.
- [ ] publish these somewhere. These could also be tweet threads if it works like that.
Teach it
- [ ] Get in-roads to teaching product. i.e. volunteer to become a mentor/help coach PM's or designers in product.
Objective 2: Reduce time i spend on periphery things.
The aim of this is to focus on 1. Family/friends, 2. Job.
- [ ] I enjoyed foraying back into brand and graphic design this year, but some stuff took a lot of time and energy and, although I loved the result. It was actually a lot of stress that I didn’t need. I’ll say yes to bits of this, but keep scope small.
- [x] Back in 2020 I used running as a crutch to de-stress. This didn’t help me much as I ended up running far too much and got anxious and stressed when I couldn’t fit it in. Now I’ll run for exercise and enjoyment to multiply productivity. 2021 was a great year for running. 1000km and some excellent stories about runs that I truly enjoyed, with friends.
